Winter Trip to Chile

Chile Kayak Trip is a Great Christmas Present
Come paddle with us in the heart of Chile’s Lakes District. It will be summertime with lots of great waterfalls for you to experience. This region of Chile is known for its volcanoes, whitewater rivers, culture, and beauty. Your trip will be co-led by Huge Experiences/New River Academy instructors at their Rio Trancura base. The base even has its very own play hole. So, if you want more after your daily run you can walk down to the play hole and work on your loop. Each day will have a cool educational experience as well. Your first day will be a safety orientation to set the safety standard. You will also gain experience in photo, video, blogging, cultural history, and Spanish scavenger hunt. It is the coolest way to learn. So, bring shorts and sun screen cause it is boating time, Chile style.

Cost Reduced from $1975 to $1,545 -
Students have the option to bring their own kayaks or rent one from Huge Experiences for $20/day. Rental is cheaper than expected airline boat charges. Huge has both creek and play boats.

Skills Needed -
If you are an intermediate to advanced boater with a confident roll in class III then you are qualified for this trip. You will get to focus on a combo of freestyle kayaking on excellent waves and clean, pool-drop, waterfall runs. The best of both kayak worlds.

Flights -
You will fly into Temuco, Chile. Our travel agent will help you arrange flights in order that everyone arrives and departs at the same time. She also seeks group rates to save you money.

Safety -
This is Huge Experiences’ international base for high school kayakers. You will run the Upper Palguin, the Upper and Lower Trancura, the San Pedro, and the Rio Fuy. Each run is class III-IV. Some rapids will challenge you and you may elect to portage. But that is part of learning to be a safe kayaker.

Week of Colorado Kayaking

Rocky Mountain Junior Kayak League Pre-Season Camp
The pre-season camp is going to be sick! We will paddle everyday on different rivers throughout Colorado. We will seek out the best play spots and river runs in the state and challenge our skills to get ready for the kayak league season ahead of us. The camp dates are June 15-19, and finishes at the FibARK whitewater festival in Salida.

You will be able to meet, watch, and learn from many pro kayakers as well as compete in the events at FibARK. Points earned in events will add up to the Colorado Junior State Championship and to your team’s overall standing at JKL (see the “events” paragraph for more details). We will also get to run the classic sections of the Arkansas River and work on our river running skills.

We will spend Monday through Wednesday checking out new playspots and river runs in Colorado. This will allow you to develop your playboating and river running skills with excellent coaching from the JKL coaches. You will have the opportunity to work with all of the JKL coaches through out the camp.

Thursday and Friday will be Safety and Rescue days, where you will learn and develop river safety and swiftwater rescue skills necessary for whitewater kayaking. We will finish the camp at Fibark June 20th - 21st, where we will compete in the Junior events. We need parent volunteers to help carpool and chaperone, so please let me know of any interested parents. Parents should not need to chaperone for the whole week. If you can help for even a day or two, please let your coach know.
